Registration Deadline: Feb 11, 2026 11:30 AM
This interactive workshop invites Teaching Assistants to critically examine how race and racism shape educational structures, practices, and outcomes and reimagine their teaching through the lens of antiracist pedagogy. Grounded in the principles of Critical Race Theory (CRT), the session explores how dominant narratives, institutional power, and systemic inequities impact students' lived experiences and learning environments. Through case studies, collaborative dialogue, and practical tools, attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how to enact antiracist pedagogy in everyday practice. This session is ideal for educators committed to equity, ready to challenge the status quo, and eager to cultivate transformative learning communities.
Session Goals:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Reflect on their own positionality and the role of Teaching Assistants in shaping classroom experiences
- Analyze how curriculum, assessment, and classroom norms may reinforce racial hierarchies
- Apply CRT-informed strategies to disrupt deficit thinking and promote counter-narratives
Presenters: Nassisse Solomon and Mandy Penney
Note: Registration closes by 11:30AM February 11th, 2026.
This session qualifies as a Future Prof credit towards the Western Certificate in University Teaching & Learning.
